LOS ANGELES – Lacy mantilla veils barely covering a body-con metallic gold shift, Asian gingham with oversized white fascinator headpieces, and cold-shoulder Maria Claras topped with a stylized rice-paddy hat, gave a Philippine Independence Day bash a dash of flash and pride as business leaders celebrated the 120th anniversary of freedom from Spain.
Las Vegas fashion designer, David Tupaz, creative director for Vegas Life TV, adorned 25 fashion-institute models with his bold creations, as 450 guests sipped Tanduay Rum liquor based on Philippine native plant.
“Filipino rum Tanduay,” says G. Töngi “has been named the world’s No.1 rum brand by Drinks International, overtaking Bacardi for the first time.”
Tasty sumptuous fusion cuisine also was served at the Centennial Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza LAX. Tupaz seemed to give a nod to the New York City’s Met Gala theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The gala fundraises for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
The Philippine Consul General hosted the Consular Corps and Philippine legislators including Sen. Maria Lourdes Nancy Sombillo Binay. Los Angeles county and city officials and community leaders feted Philippine Independence June 12.
In his speech, Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz read the Independence Day messages of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano before cutting a giant Independence Day cake. Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for Budget and Innovation Miguel Sangalang, with Public Works Commissioner Joel Jacinto, L.A. County Deputy Chief of Protocol Lourdes Saab and Cerritos City Mayor Mark Pulido each presented proclamations marking the anniversary.
Besides emceeing, vocalist Annie Nepomuceno also sang ‘The Prayer” with Sal Malaki, L.A. Opera tenor. Other entertainers were Geneva Cruz and Gelo Francisco.
Couturier Tupaz has dressed various U.S. celebrities including Hollywood A-listers. Based in Sin City since 2010, Tupaz represents Vegas in every major American Fashion Week. He founded the Las Vegas Fashion Design Council a year after arriving. The non-profit organization helps develop Vegas fashion and assists up-and-coming designers in their creative growth through workshops, educational programs, and the likes. Vegas Life TV is a network sister company of VAsian TV and ACTV Asian Culture TV. He’s editor-in-chief of Las Vegas Fashion magazine, L’Vegue.
