CARSON — Anita Aves-Santarina, wife of Carson Councilmember and former Mayor ProtemElitoSantarina, passed away last Sunday, September 23, after a lingering illness.
Mrs. Santarina, a retired chemical engineer, was an active community leader and was a solid supporter of her husband’s numerous community projects and activities. Despite her busy schedule as a career professional, Mrs. Santarina found time to engage in many civic and community activities, such as her involvement with the Filipino Community of Carson, Philippine Independence Day Foundation, Carson Women’s Club, and the Pangasinan Association of Greater Long Beach.
She was one of the founders of the Mapua Institute of Technology Alumni Association with the late President Raul Domingo, Cabanatuan City Association, Inc., Tayug Association, and Bongabon Nueva Ecija Association, among others.She was also active in the projects of St. Philomena Parish in Carson.
Annie, as she was known to her friends, was born on June 7, 1944 in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija to Dr. Antonio Lacuna Aves and Maria SisonCruz. She attended Bongabon High School, where she graduated as Salutatorian of her class. She graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila, Philippines with aBachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. She took further studies in Mathematics and Chemistry at the University of the Philippines and De la Salle University, which helped her to even more qualifyas a professor at the College of the Immaculate Conception in Cabanatuan City.
Mrs. Santarina immigrated to the United States with her family in 1974. She was employed as a chemist by several companies that manufacture and distribute pharmaceutical and vitamin products. She eventually became Quality Assurance Director of the following companies: P. Leiner Health Products (1980-1997), Natrol (1997-1998), and Herbalife International (1998-2009), from where she retired in 2009.
Although her job demanded that she traveled to countries like Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines, India, Mexico and Europe, the family was always her priority, especially taking care of her husband, Elito, and was able to maintain a loving and a happy home.
Annie is survived by her husband,ElitoMacapagalSantarina, whom she married on January 3, 1970; her three children, Ann Mairah(married to Joseph Malana), Ann Rea (married to William Glenn Ratcliffe, US Navy, Ret.), and Neil Francis, US Navy; grandchildren Neil Anthony, US Navy (married to Maisey), Frankie, Chloe, Capri, and Joey andgreat-grandchild Averie Jaymes.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, October 3, at the Green Hills Mortuary and Memorial Chapels (27301 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90725) at Cove Suite (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and at the Chapel (4:30 to 8:30 p.m.). Novena will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Burial will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park at 27301 S. Western Ave, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90725) after a memorial mass at the St. Philomena Church (21900 S. Main Street, Carson, CA 90745) at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 4.
