Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.—2 Timothy 1:13-14
The Bible is God’s message to all humankind. These divinely inspired words from God are not only relevant, but highly applicable to each of us today. How do we know this? It is because when we open the Bible to read, study and apply it in our lives on a daily basis, we discover that God’s word for his world has not changed and that God’s will for his people has not changed. The world has changed. The culture has changed. The church has changed. Yet the word of God along with his will and his ways have not changed in over 2,000 years—they are timeless truths for our changing times.
Timeless truths hide beneath every biblical command and remain applicable today, even though the specific command may no longer apply. We obey God not simply because he says so—though that would be enough—but because we understand that every commandment reflects God’s holy character. Why? For the LORD God said, “You must be holy because I am holy”(Leviticus 11:45).
Today our challenge isn’t just trying to understand the Bible. The challenge in our age, as in past ages, is to read, study and apply the principles of the Bible in our lives so that God’s truth may shine in and through us—making him known to the world. Thus, we can live holy lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.
