SAN FRANCISCO – Assistant Speaker pro Tempore Leland Y. Yee will hold a press conference to urge Caltrans to implement safety projects along 19th Avenue to mitigate an ever-present pedestrian and motorist safety crisis. Recent accidents have highlighted the need for safety and infrastructure improvements along 19th Avenue, one of the city’s primary transit corridors.
“19th Avenue is a major transit corridor in the City and County of San Francisco. The recent series of accidents highlights the dangerous nature of this particular roadway for motorists and pedestrians alike” stated Assistant Speaker pro Tempore Yee.
In June, Assemblyman Yee convened a meeting with Supervisor Tony Hall, Supervisor Fiona Ma, and key transit and public safety authorities in his San Francisco office to discuss possible solutions to the 19th Avenue safety problems. Since this is a State Road, Caltrans must have the will to follow through with stated plans to improve safety along this important route.
“I will do everything in my power to impress upon Caltrans that improvements must be made sooner than later. I am here to help with any resources I have. In the long-term, if 19th Avenue will continue to serve the City and County of San Francisco as a major transit route, appropriate safety improvements must be implemented. I am committed to making sure that happens, so that pedestrians and motorists alike are safer out on 19th Avenue,” Assemblyman Yee concluded.
