The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!—Matthew 13:44-46
God himself arrived not only to save us from sin and death, but to rescue us, but to restore us in order to live in and through us. Christ came and paid the ultimate price of sin through his suffering and death, “to bring sinners safely home to God,” (1 Peter 3:18). His resurrection from the dead is our great “source of all joy” (Psalm 43:4).
The angel reassured the shepherds:
“Don’t be afraid! I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people (Luke 2:10).
Jesus himself is the Great Joy that makes all the related joys of our salvation so great. The risen Christ is the Treasure hidden in the field. He is the Pearl of great price.
He is not just God with us, here to save us, but he is our greatest joy, the foremost and finest Treasure, who will satisfy our souls forever like only the divine-human Christ can.
This Christmas child is more than Lord our Savior. He is our great Treasure. The apostle Paul revealed, “And this is the secret: Christ lives in you.” This assures us of sharing and rejoicing in the eternal glory of Christ for which God created the world. Christmas is not finally about his birth for our salvation, but about our existence for his glory to make our joy in Jesus known.
