As Filipinos welcome 2019, Vice President Leni Robredo urged the public to continue on with the fight against poverty, violence, and injustice in the country.

In her New Year message, Robredo said Filipinos should join hands in the face of a bigger challenge in the year ahead to uplift the lives of those on the fringes of society.

(This 2019, let us continue to join hands in the fight versus poverty, violence, and loss of justice.),” Robredo, an advocate of the poor, said.

(Let us together bring hope in every community, where we belong.),” she continued.

The Vice President wished all Filipinos better lives in 2019 despite the difficulties that have been in the past year.

(I’m hoping 2019 will bring better life for everyone. So lets accept with open hand the challenges of the coming year.),” she said.

Filipinos, mostly the poor, felt the impact of inflation that reached as high as 6.7 percent in 2018. They suffered from higher prices of basic goods and other services.

The government’s bloody drug war claimed 4,500 lives in police operations, but human rights groups estimated the number of deaths reached 20,000, including the victims of extrajudicial killings.

Robredo, a former housing chief, observed the heroism and courageous act of Filipinos, who helped other people in times of need.

(Many of them voiced the truth without fear, showed compassion even for enemies, and served those on the fringes of society.),” she said.

With this, the Vice President sees another full year of hope for Filipinos.

(The new year is a time for new beginning and despite what happened in the past, any path we take, we still have the chance to achieve the future we dream of.),” she continued. (Manila Bulletin)
