Erik Matti: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is ‘old school’

Queen of all media Kris Aquino on Friday flew to Los Angeles, California for the movie premiere of the Warner Bros. film “Crazy Rich Asians,” which she is part of.

MANILA, Philippines — Outspoken veteran director Erik Matti gave his insight on the recent Hollywood movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” which boasted of an all-Asian cast, including the Philippines’ “Queen of All Media” Kris Aquino.

On his Instagram account, the director of critically-acclaimed films such as “OTJ” and “Buy Bust” described the film adaptation of the hit book by Kevin Kwan with the same title as “a piece of old school 90’s style TV movie.”

“No matter how successful this #CrazyRichAsian movie is, it’s still just a piece of old school 90’s style TV movie. Caricature acting, white man’s view on asians, cliche insights wrapped in flashy modern parties, tita sensibilities, bad direction,” Erik wrote.

“This is no Pretty Woman! Far from it. But who can argue with success? That’s why everyone here I think wants to make a version of this here. #kumitakayamagandanayan,” he added.

“Heneral Luna” actor John Arcilla commented on the director’s post, saying that he has not watched it yet.

“I have not watch it yet Direk. Americans daw are laughing with the idea. When i saw the trailer its just the typical plot naman of a Cinderella Story di ba? kaya parang feeling kongaCliche’… yun lang… my two cents heheheehe!” the actor wrote.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Crazy Rich Asians” was shown in Philippine cinemas last August.

Recently, Erik made headlines for parting ways with ABS-CBN as director of an upcoming “Darna” revival. “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: AngBatangHeneral” director Jerrold Tarog replaced Erik as the film’s new director.
