Is there more to Gelli de Belen’s return to GMA than meets the eye?
Artists without an exclusive contract enjoy a freelance status as well as the privilege to work in any of the country’s three major TV stations.
In the case of Gelli who has gone full circle, she’s back to where she co-hosted the defunct show, “Sis.” She now plays one of the major roles in the afternoon teledrama, “Ika-5 Utos.” Prior to this, the actress last appeared on ABS-CBN’s “FPJ’s AngProbinsyano,” however, playing a dispensable, deglamorized character.
Vignettes recalls one of those off-camera chitchats with Gelli, who was added to the lineup of GMA Pinoy TV’s “Tweetbiz” hosts sometime in 2012. Her management office, Backroom Inc., was then negotiating for her transfer to ABS-CBN via a teleserye.
However, the project fizzled out. Next thing Vignettes knew, Gelli had already moved to TV5 which offered her to host a food show aptly titled “Gellicious.”
With a career that swung like a pendulum, hopefully, Gelli has found her way back home where she can be given assignments one after the other. Network transfer these days, revealed our source, isn’t just unique to Gelli’s case.
“Isn’t her best friend Carmina [Villaroel] already with GMA? And didn’t she and her husband Zoren Legaspi sign up their twins with the Kapuso Network? After Gelli, it looks like we see an ‘exodus’ happening,” Vignettes’ informant said. —RONNIE CARRASCO III
The impending “drain” expected to occur on ABS-CBN grounds has — still the tipster pointed out — a lot to do with the non-renewal of the network’s franchise in 2020.
“Such talks are causing unrest upon its employees and artists alike. Nagsisiguronaangmgaartistanilaroon kaya this early a lot of them are adopting contingency measures, kumbaga.”
As a result of this initial wave of transfer cases foreseen to snowball before the apocalyptic year, “Namumuroblemanamanngayonang GMA. Saan at paanonamannilakasiilalagayang displaced transferees, e, homegrown or contractual artists nganila, hindimabigyan ng trabaho?”
Paging ABS-CBN’s and GMA’s corporate communications heads [Kane Choa and Angel Javier, respectively], is there even a tinge of truth to this?
