Q:  Why do you feel you should be in a debt program?

A:  The sweet temptation of the savings from enrolling in a debt program may be inviting to some but there are some negative points to consider so be sure that you are in severe hardship before contemplating in entering one.  Some companies may give some misleading information and you may end up with empty promises of a program that was presented as a walk in the park but in reality was walk in a dark forest where you may find yourself helpless and be sorry you went in.

Let me tell you of a client who came to me just to seek advice on what she had recently done and wasn’t absolutely sure that she did the right thing for her situation. Why do you feel you should be in a debt program? I queried on her situation as she said she was retiring on two years.   Is that sufficient reason to be in a debt program?  She wasn’t late with her bills and she was able to pay them on time without any hardship.  She enrolled with a company she saw on TV and they promised her a big discount on her total debt which was not even really large where I can say she was buried.

As I asked her more questions it became evident that she was not feeling any hardship but was sold a debt program in order to be done with them sooner.  She told me that creditors were already starting to call her and she was getting worried.  As I explained that would be one of the effects of entering the program.  Just one, not to mention they may take legal action.  That was when she on her own decided that the program was not the right one for her.  I mentioned to her that she was going to be in the program the same length of time it would actually take to pay the debts herself with the way she was paying them.  It would be disastrous to take the path of a desperate person especially of you were not.

Another point was when I asked her if she has money out away, to which she answered yes, means she was earning 2% interest while paying on debts that compounded at 21% interest.  Instead of holding on to that money, just pay off the debts.  Don’t just hand over hard earned money to the bank month after month without a fighting chance.  Just pay off the debts and you don’t have to wait the two years.
