You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. For “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” That word is the good news that was announced to you.—1 Peter 1:23-25
Peter states that we can love one another deeply because the seed from which our new life in Christ sprang up from is imperishable. It will live and last for eternity. It is not like our physical strength, which is wasting away day by day. Rather it is an endless love that is always beating with new life. So, our love will always be alive and actively engaged.
Now the Holy Spirit is not only the source of this new life, but the channel or the conduit or the pipeline that he used to seed new life into us was the word of God. The Bible is God’s message from himself about himself to humankind. This is the same channel that God still uses today to accomplish spiritual work in our lives. Therefore, God’s message to us, found in the Bible, causes this book to have a unique quality about it that makes it unlike any other book in the world.
That’s why we believe the Bible to be holy. The word “bible” comes from the Greek word bíblos which means “book.” But obviously, God’s written word is a supernatural book, and so we call it the Holy Bible. And because God will continue to do his wondrous work in and through our lives “through the living and enduring word,” he has protected and preserved it so that it will remain forever.
