Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno will not run for any position in next year’s national elections, one of her lawyers said recently.
“CJ Sereno has decided to forego any plans to run for any political office in the next election,” Jojo Lacanilao told GMA News Online in a text message.
Sereno, who was ousted from her post after the Supreme Court granted the quo warranto petition filed to question the legality of her appointment as top judge, previously said she was open to running for the Senate.
Some members of the opposition Liberal Party (LP) have expressed interest in having Sereno as part of its senatorial slate for next year’s midterm elections.
According to Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Sereno would be a “good candidate” for the opposition.
Early this month, the former top magistrate’s name was included in the list of possible candidates of the LP for the 2019 Senate polls. — BM, GMA News
