MANILA – As he drew flak for rude behavior caught on camera, ACTS OFW Party-list Rep. Aniceto “John” Bertiz III is in hospital after suffering from chest pains, his allies in the House of Representatives said Wednesday.
“He is suffering from hypertension and high blood pressure,” Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza told reporters.
In jest, Atienza said: “He is in the hospital to have his menstrual period checked.”
Bertiz had been complaining of chest pains since Tuesday, House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez added. The lawmaker underwent a heart bypass surgery years back, he said.
Bertiz, the House deputy minority leader, was criticized after he was seen in a viral video refusing to remove his shoes during a routine security check at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
The clip, uploaded on Facebook page Bitcoin 101, also showed Bertiz flashing what appeared to be an ID on the face of a screener manning the metal detector. He then snatched the security officer’s own ID.
Bertiz apologized over the incident but was further criticized after he joked about having menstrual period as an excuse for his bad behavior.
Suarez earlier said an ethics case will be launched against Bertiz.
The lawmaker’s previous misdemeanors – including a shouting match with an overseas Filipino worker and a joke about withholding the licenses of some board passers – also resurfaced earlier this week days after the airport row.
“We do not condone his (Bertiz) misconduct,” Suarez said as he announced that the House Ethics Committee would soon begin its preliminary investigation.
“This is an opportunity for Cong. Bertiz to undergo due process and for the public to know what truly transpired in the said incident,” he said.
