Most often than not, the definition of resolutions are difficult to describe. Yet, they lead on to more hopes and dreams meant to renew the latter and the expected resonance from new choices.
What are resolutions?
Are there enough nouns that reflect bits of dauntlessness, spurred by more than a sense of decision involvement triggered by such themes mulled about, solely with each approach to a new year?
Synonyms of resolutions have been identified with the terms: Steadfastness? .Determination? Staunchness? Resolve? Promise? Firmness? Resilience? Commitment?
The Oxford “Complete Wordfinder” reminds mankind that resolutions indicate boldness, firmness of purpose and cites intentions through “New Year Resolutions.”
Thus, with a new year, one hears about resolutions more often than any part of one’s calendar year.
Somehow, this space’s columnist is inclined to believe ostensibly, that “New Year Resolutions” are expected to surface, traceable to some part of an early school age when teachers in grade
school and high school made classes write essays on the subject matter.
During those early school years, most students did not attach anything of significance to the job of articulating those resolutions. More often than not, the students (then called “pupils”), were merely
complying with an essay-writing requirement.
Many a time, when the subjects in reference to resolutions emerged, a great many of my classmates arrived at a consensus: the annual ritual was boring, and had this writer been possessed
of the courage to challenge our mentors, many of us would have joined together to sound off, ergo: “Do we really have to?”
Today, this very query seems to be part of the growing young’s vocabulary and they don’t refer to writing resolutions.
When they say so, the extra-youthful voices hope to hear from their elders how it is not obligatory to dwell in resolutions in that manner: writing them as they have been used to in their early years.
However monotonous those resolutions might appear as we see them in today’s light, they do portray certain rules in life styles, even if they probably were just meant to be nothing more than
what appear on paper.
The issue with respect to writing resolutions is not new at all.
Many among us can relate to the fact that resolutions have long been with us, whether they have become part of a new year or not.
Yet, there is a need to attain a workable general definition which can be particularly enervating in a day-to-day-out schedule which has become part of us as the years descend on the everyday
The above arises not only from the extraordinary volume of experience data concerning the resolutions that should continue to prod us, but likewise from the increasing importance of the same
resolves that should be guidelines in their relation to life and living.
Mankind is in a curious situation. It lives. But its resolutions might easily be set aside. There probably isn’t a large number that shows awareness of the existence of resolutions. Though they
may appear to be of little significance, everyone likes to think that by having them, one can live up to them and derive a feeling of satisfaction by having them as guideposts.
The literature on resolutions is so vast and diverse as to defy summarization. All researchers know the latter as a reality. It grows even more realistically as the years continue to arrive on the scene.
Unconsciously, the volume of those aforementioned years enriches time as resolutions get evaluated through the ages.
In the wake of new challenges presented by equally changing times, there will be severe demands on everyone without exception.
Even if they won’t be dubbed “New Year Resolutions,” if the title is not apropos to consider some points as challenges. The latter term can be capable of tackling in the same breath borne by a wish to indulge in them.
Unsurprisingly, resolutions have been singled out as abstract items. But they cannot be eschewed. They linger on. They are constant reminders that they keep us going where we ought to be.
Surrounded by other resolves, they have their respective place. We are to look up to them and gratify our wishes when accomplished.
Numbers among us might consider further that resolutions are “useless.”
But when replacements are needed, the same resolutions have a distinct role to play in one’s creed. Because of that specification, they are worthy of a second look.
Perhaps, the debate may rest there. At least for the moment: “not” on whether mankind can realize their assurance, but rather “when” it can get down to working on them to enable us to view the
methodology, largely, traced to their origins to help shape up our intents for the future.
